Filed under: kenyaOne of the top/only tourist attractions in Nairobi is visiting the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Orphanage. The orphanage is home to dozens of orphaned elephants and rhinos and every morning they allow tourists to come see the baby elephants as they are fed.
Most of the animals are orphaned because their mothers are killed by poachers, so in addition to helping to raise the animals before they are released back into the wild the trust raises awareness about the dangers of poaching. We greatly enjoyed getting to see the elephants (the one rhino they currently have is blind and therefore does not participate in the public feedings) especially after seeing them from a little farther away on the savannah.
